Designing an inclusive, voter-first digital platform for civic engagement
Overview
El Paso County Elections partnered with us to modernize their digital voter experience and expand access to critical election information. The new website and mobile app needed to serve a diverse community, support multilingual users, meet WCAG accessibility standards, and scale across future election cycles. The goal was simple: make it faster and easier for every voter to participate, stay informed, and navigate the election process with confidence.
Approach
To support the county’s commitment to transparency, equity, and accessibility, I led the UX and visual design for the new web platform and companion mobile app.
Key decisions included:
Redesigned site architecture and user flows for clarity and ease of use
Applied WCAG accessibility standards and conducted accessibility reviews
Created custom iconography and simplified visual cues to guide users across languages and literacy levels
Designed responsive layouts optimized for desktop, mobile, and assistive technology
Introduced a Voter Dashboard for quick access to personalized voting tools (polling place, sample ballots, key dates)
Integrated multilingual content and collaborated with county translators on Spanish-language accuracy
Partnered with developers to ensure ADA compliance and build CMS support for instant content updates across web + iOS + Android apps
Aligned with election officials to validate clarity, accuracy, and usability
The result was a cohesive, scalable digital system built to support voters before, during, and between elections.
Impact
80% increase in website traffic and notable lift in voter engagement
Voters reached polling location information in ~2 fewer clicks, improving task efficiency
Continual “Outstanding” rating from the League of Women Voters of Texas (awarded to only 61 of 254 counties statewide)
Praised by residents as “user-friendly, clear, and more modern than larger Texas counties”
Helped support 150,000–200,000 new voter registrations since the original site launch
Empowered the Elections Department to update content across platforms in real-time via a unified CMS
“The community loves our website. They say it's user-friendly, clear, concise, and better than other counties. We’ve seen increased voter engagement and registrations thanks to this platform.” — Veronica Parada, Elections Systems & Technology Coordinator
